What goes around…
We’re tough on our trucks. We drive them hard and use them to navigate broken roads that would be otherwise impassable to any other vehicle. Every now and then our humvees repay our abuse by breaking down outside the wire. Never much fun at all. A few days ago, while out on a patrol, one of our trucks dropped its transmission. We were several miles from home and had to crawl (at nearly 3 MPH) all the way back. We’re use to moving pretty fast, and a guy can feel a tad vulnerable at speeds so slow that elderly Iraqi women are able to keep pace. Eventually (i.e. about an hour later) we made it back to the camp without trouble. We borrowed a truck from another platoon and went back to our barracks to wait for our next mission.
