A few days ago we were out pulling security while we waited for the explosives guys to arrive and take care of a rocket that had been found in the middle of a field. Our lieutenant told Corky and I to take up an observation point on the roof of an abandoned building nearby. The two of us (three of us when the LT came up to see what was going on) sat up there scanning the villages to the East with binoculars and the scopes of our rifles when someone from the village took some pot-shots at us. Farmers in the fields in front of us stopped and stared in the direction of the shots and then took their children and ran inside their houses. The locals around here are used to gunfire and don't usually react to it at all, so we knew the guy must be close by. Only four rounds were fired and they didn't hit anywhere near us, but it definitely got our heads down. We weren't able to identify where the man was shooting from because of closely packed buildings. The gun trucks quickly pulled up alongside the building for additional support and we didn't have any other problems. The explosives team arrived and blew up the rocket and we went on our way.
