Then and now
Two years ago this very week I was vacationing in Mexico with my family watching the initial invasion of Iraq from the comfort of a sofa. Funny how things work out. Can't just change the channel this year. My family was supposed to be staying at the same resort in the same room this Spring break but they cancelled the trip. I swear, life keeps getting stranger the older I get.

It can be as strange as it has to be as long as you keep getting older. Stay safe cousin.

Auntie Memmer here. You'll be on that family vacation again. Keep in mind that you are a soldier first and an angel second. We all have appreciated your kindness to the children, but don't let your guard down. The insurgents will use children to kill you and the other soldiers.
Joey, I hope you can email your dad, Jim, and your mom, my sister Kathy, your worst and most intimate thoughts and experiences as time goes on. You are a great storyteller and have a future in jounalism. Some thoughts need to be told later when Uncle Sam or Rumsfeld isn't monitoring your blog. Just word of caution. Love you and I have a package on the way. Auntie Marilyn
It's crazy how things happen that you would have never imagined, but it's your path is destined and already made for you. All you can look towards now is how it will be two years from now... not even that! A year from now...
Although I'm sure not many people envy you... what an experience it is. I'm sure you've heard that many times. Good luck to you and all your guys. I'm so impressed with your stories...
As corny as this may sound, your life has a plan and god is taking care of you.
Keep up the AWESOME work!
Joe-yes, my son, life does have its roller coaster rides. I agree with your Aunt Marilyn, be on your guard-ALWAYS-during your time in Iraq. Dad and I sent off our special gifts for you to distribute to your favorite children. Let us know when you receive them. My love & prayers, Momma xoxo
JoeJoe-
Hey, I saw that on Feb. 17th you posted a picture of a Bedouin woman and her child picking up spent bullets. I just read a book for my Anthropology Women & Culture class, called Veiled Sentiments by Lila Abu-Lughod, on the Bedouin society that presides in Egypt...SO interesting...the modesty and honor codes they follow are amazing. I'm glad you have the chance to see other cultures as they are, even in war-times. I am sure they all feel fortunate to have you over there...if only all were like you :-)I love you so much. Keep your head down and your spirits up, my sidekick. Keep thriving on peace too Joe, I know that you are fighting for hating what is wrong...and I am proud of you for that. Love Lori Ann xoxoxo
"resides" not "presides"- sorry for the typo- feel stupid now
