breaking up is hard to do

Today 2nd platoon was broken up and scattered throughout the unit. The justification was that we will have more depth and fighting power as a unit if we focus on just three platoons instead of being thinly spread over four. I understand the reasoning and I do believe that we will all be safer because of it. Regardless of our understanding, myself and many of my best friends are heart-broken over the change. The men of 2nd platoon have become brothers over the last six months of training. Dealing with where we are and where we are going has brought us so close together. I have a hard time imagining having to go on without them, and I’m not sure I would have made it this far, or dealt with this so well, without them by my side. I know that in the long run this change is better for everyone. I know that we are all still in the same unit and will be able to hang out often. It is just difficult to accept that when it comes time for my first combat mission in Iraq I won’t have with me the men I have come to know and love so well. No matter how much I wish we were still together, I am comforted by the fact that the form our unit has taken will make it that much easier to bring everyone home safely. That is all that’s really important.

Sorry to hear about the "break-up". It seems like a difficult time to have to get re-oriented within another group; but if the prayers of many of us that you leave behind have any value, then for some less than readily apparent reason it's going to work out for the best. Glad to hear you're not letting it get you down - keep up the great attitude, Uncle Petee.
