And counting

Two years ago today President Bush stood on an aircraft carrier off the Persian Gulf and declared "mission accomplished." Since that speech 1449 American soldiers have died here in Iraq. Though strides have been taken, a successful election, stabalized infrastructure, etc., from where I stand the mission is not yet accomplished. As long as American men and women continue to lose life and limb I’ll have a very diffucult time calling this war a success. The cost of our campaign here continues to rise daily. Though two years have passed since Bush declared an end to major combat, we are still here and are very much still engaged in major combat. I know that to many people this war has grown old. We grow tired of hearing politicians speak of it, and we often wish the news would find something new to cover. But please don’t forget that we are here and that we are still fighting. It is up to you to decide for yourself whether this war has been worth the price, but for better or worse we are seeing this one through.

My son, we NEVER let you wander far from our thoughts or prayers. Our focus as a "TEAM" since it encompasses so many people, is the GOOD that you and your troop are doing on behalf of the Iraqi children. This week is very special since we prepare to collect all the shoes & clothes and deliver them to Glenn Zerkle's office. My driver, Bijan Bodaghi, who is from Iran, has insisted on donating his services for the ALL DAY pick-ups in a Pacific Executive SUV. Your Dad and many others have set aside Wednesday, May 4th as the sorting & packing day. The boxes will be mailed on Thursday, May 5th. Perhaps this is the ONLY reason you ended up in Iraq, Joe, to show the face of kindness & compassion from the U.S. Thank you for your generous and courageous representation of our beloved country--My love, Momma xoxo

Joey,

You will never be forgotten. As long as you are there putting your life on the line for something far greater than yourself, you and your comrades will ALWAYS be in our thoughts and prayers.

Joe- We will never forget what you guys are doing. And the word of your shoe drive just keeps spreading. I sent an email today to the person who put the bug in my ear. A friend of hers - Dennis Newell (I think), from the Seattle area had a son in Iraq (in the Guard)and she had heard about a shoe drive that they did. She had told me about it and from there all this has mushroomed. She was thrilled to hear of our success and is passing the message on to the father of this other Guard soldier. Amazing what a little word-of-mouth can turn into.

I am headed over to help pack in just a few minutes. Thinking of you!
Love,
Barbie

The great thing about this country is that you, as a soldier, get to vote, and are there to protect my right to vote. It's great that you swore an oath to protect the Constitution, and not some man or party. And America created the internet, so you can have this discussion with us from thousands of miles away. A great country. Vote however you want, next time we get a chance.
