Training continues
It seems like weeks since I’ve posted, but I guess it’s only been a few days. I’ve been really busy with my training lately, and haven’t had much time to myself. I think we’re all feeling a little worn down, and it is definitely starting to show a bit. It isn’t a big deal; we just need a day or so to recharge our batteries.
Despite the hectic schedule, the last few days have actually been pretty fun. Earlier this week we learned how to sweep through a village and clear various buildings looking to capture insurgents. It really gets your blood pumping as you run from building to building looking for cover, hearing gun fire all around. Or the feeling you get as you stand silently outside of a door, waiting to rush into a room and take whoever is in it by surprise. It reminds me of the feeling I use to get playing sports as a kid. I’m not sure what else to call it but a feeling of physical victory. Being able to use both your mind and your muscle to accomplish your job, and to do it well. I realize that this is not a game and that my job has very real, very serious consequences. Believe me that I’d much rather feel the exhilaration of kicking my friend’s ass at basketball than risk life and limb, but sometimes we find ourselves is circumstances we didn’t anticipate and we have to do our best to make the most of it. Admittedly, it is often difficult to keep a smile on your face, but hopefully you’ve got some good friends that will help to put the whole thing in perspective. I’m fortunate to have such people nearby.
For now I’m going to concentrate on what they teach me. While I love school now, I have spent much of my younger years trying to do well while exerting as little effort as possible. That won’t fly here. I’m not interested in half-assing it at this stuff. I need to constantly remind myself that, while I wish I was back home doing the things I love with the people I care about, the quickest way to get back my normal life is to be a great soldier. It isn’t quite what I thought I’d strive to be but once again, that’s the way it is.
Sorry for the infrequent posting. I’m going to try to wring some more time from my day to respond to emails and post here. Thanks again for taking checking in from time to time.
